Saltbush, blue bush, alternating with myall and mulga, red sandy looking soil, flat topped mesas in the distance, mildly undulating …
Passing Pimba – the only toilet stop in several hundred kms. Turn off point for Woomera, Roxby Downs, Andamooka – we’re heading further north.
Wide open spaces – photographs don’t convey anything of what you see here – even the colours don’t transfer well to the digital image.
Eucolo Creek did have some pools of water – not flowing -more like a large ’claypan’. Red, sand dune type mounds nearby are covered in sparse but very green vegetation.
Is there really water in Lake Hart? Or is it just an illusion, a mirage that will retreat as we get closer to its edge. We were looking forward to seeing the salt pan but recent rains have spoilt that expectation. It is rare for the lake to fill, however.
Glendambo lunch stop – a hard life out here!
Apparently this is an important pastoral area for SA with a number of significant leases and a history of unlikely owners – a State Premier and an Adelaide butcher among them. Mt Eba, Bon Bon and MacDouall Peak are the names to look out for. Lots of signs of mining exploration – drill holes, some excavations, truck movements, etc.
Staying in Coober Pedy overnight.Visited an underground museum, part of an old mine linked to re-purposed underground living quarters. The unit we booked is built into the ground.
Wildlife etc
Sheep, sheep, sheep
Dead cow
Ducks or other small waterfowl in the ponds from recent rains
Flies
